EXT - GARDEN HARVEST BUSHES 12 YEARS LATER - MID-DAY
The GARDEN in EARLY-HARVEST is expansive, flourishing:
ANGLE SLOW-APPROACH: DENSE BUSHES and trees HIDING: [ADAM, EVE]
[ELLE] CALLING, OFF-SCREEN: MOVES ACROSS, AND CENTER, as she searches
for Adam and Eve:
[ELLE] (OS-distant)
(calling)
Eve - Adam!? |
ADAM at 14 speaks more senatorially deliberately:
EVE at 12 quick-responds sweetly, more emotion-ranging:
They talk-play:
|
ADAM
Snakes don't talk: You do the talking for them.
EVE
Mr. Gabriel doesn't talk: You do the talking for him.
ADAM
I've seen your snakes: They don't really talk.
EVE
I've never seen your Mr. Gabriel: He isn't real.
ADAM
He is, too, real: He was my teacher: He was like daddy.
EVE
Mommy told you about daddy: I believe her, not you.
ADAM
You don't always do what she tells you: You believe yourself.
EVE
I'm a little child: I don't have to do what mommy tells me, all the time. |
ANGLE APPROACH: PEER through trees: Adam, Eve, amid bushes, HALF-VIEW:
[ELLE] (OS-distant)
(calling)
Adam!
ADAM
You're trying to be disobedient: You might die if you don't grow-up.
[ELLE] (OS-distant)
(calling)
Eve!
EVE
(places leaf-knot)
Let's make clothes: You can grow-up first.
ADAM
Mommy makes clothes from animal furs, not from tree leaves.
EVE
(retorts)
We don't have any animal furs: You grow only leaves on your trees.
ADAM
Mommy assigned me responsibility for tending the fruit trees, too.
EVE
You can't wear fruits: You can't even touch the forbidden fruit.
ADAM
The trees I tend grow more, better fruit, than the forbidden tree.
(~01:00 voice dahdah, horn)
EVE
The forbidden fruit looks just as good as yours: And it's real.
ADAM
Mommy says death is just as real for the disobedient.
EVE
(elucidates)
You'll never know what is real, until you try it.
ADAM
Mommy says we must never tempt death with our lives - nor evil with good. |
ANGLE: PEEK-THROUGH BUSHES: Adam, Eve, wearing fashioned leaves "clothing"
- half-eaten fruit scattered on the ground:
[ELLE] (OS-distant)
(calling)
Adam!
EVE
(exasperates)
You're always repeating mommy: Be a man, not a mommy.
[ELLE] (OS-distant)
(calling)
Eve!
ADAM
Mommy says we grow-up most rapidly by being obedient.
EVE
How do you prove that? Did she compare you to a forbidden man?!
ADAM
Mommy says we are not to harm the men of Earth, and their children.
EVE
(whimpers)
That leaves only me and mommy: You should repeat me, too.
ADAM
(ponders)
You're only my little sister, right now.
EVE
(pouts)
How do you think mommy got to be a mommy?!
ADAM
(kisses cheek to quiet her)
|
Fantasy fades importance: [calmer]
(~01:59 fade to quiet: voice mmm, strings)
[ELLE] (OS-near)
(arriving: calling)
Adam, Eve: Where are you?!
EVE
(whimpering to Elle)
Mommy: Adam is bothering me again!
ADAM
Eve is telling stories about talking snakes.
ELLE
(present)
Adam, Eve: I've been calling and looking for you!
ADAM
We were here - hiding.
ELLE
(notes leaf-clothes)
Why were you hiding?
EVE
(dejected)
Because we don't have clothes like yours, mommy.
ADAM
We don't have animal furs to make clothes.
EVE
And tree-leaves don't make very good clothes:
(self-examines)
See?!
ELLE
(considers)
And, what is this talk about snakes?
EVE
Adam doesn't believe me.
ELLE
Doesn't believe you about what, Eve?
EVE
That the snake answered me when I spoke to it.
ELLE
What did you tell the snake?
EVE
I told it ... I spoke the truth to the snake: like you said I must.
ELLE
The truth about what, dear?
EVE
That God created it to understand His untrembling resolve.
ELLE
What was the snake doing, Eve?
EVE
(imitates shivers)
It was, shivering, and jerking about ... it was very afraid.
ELLE
And what did the snake answer you?
EVE
It's voice in-formed my thought: The broader the idea, the calmer is the
understanding - mommy:
(whimpers again)
What does that mean?
ELLE
(ponders)
It means, Eve: You can cherish the idea of loving good.
ADAM
Mommy: Eve also took some of the fruit from the forbidden tree.
ELLE
(to Adam)
And did you eat some of it?
ADAM
She gave it to me: She said it was good fruit.
ELLE
(lecture-reviews with Adam)
Adam, we've discussed this thoroughly: You must eat only of the fruit
of your own tending: You must prove to yourself that your tree-tending
is good: that the trees you tend make more fruit than the tree that is
not tended: Never eat from the tree of laziness, knowing both good times
and evil - though that is right in the midst of your own garden business:
That tree is there to show you that the tree already grows by itself, but
you must tend your trees to improve their yield: lest you die in the evil
times: You don't eat pinecones like the birds in the trees that live only,
without fruitage - and you can't eat Life itself, like the Creator: You
can't have abstract immortality, Adam: You must live completely first -
now: And, you must teach your children to prove for them-selves - I cannot
forever pick for you the fruits of Truth - I can give you only the seeds
of the garden of Truth, which you must plant, nurture, and tend, forever,
and your children after you: Do you understand me, Adam?!
ADAM
Yes, mommy.
ELLE
(to Eve)
Eve: How did you know it was good fruit?
EVE
It looks good, the same as from the other trees; And it tasted good.
ELLE
But, dear one, obedience is also good, and much more for you to do: The
fruit is obedient to its tree, and yields to Adam's tending.
EVE
(cries)
Yes, mommy: I'm sorry.
ELLE
You'll want to keep your obedience forever after you've eaten. |
