20-1 EXT - CRATER GARDEN: FIRST HARVEST - SUMMER EVENING

Months later: Adam's flourishing crater bottom garden: Sapling trees, berry bushes, wheat field:

ADAM tends the trees: rerouting stream waters, spreading compost: While ELLE [showing near term] sings occupied: [before wearing furs]

A hungry WOLF approaches stealthily: The CAT scats.

Elle notices the cat, and wolf: pauses - reaches for a long-pole: [frond-sling+stone has better distance and strike - alt: bow+arrow is bloodier, but is also more specialized local construction]

The wolf stealthily approaches Adam from behind: Elle turns smoothly bringing the long-pole [or sling+stone or bow+arrow] down on the wolf's neck: The wolf drops.

Elle firmly resolute, takes the wolf by the scruff, drags it away up-slope toward the river whence it came.

These are cubs, the children of animals - their mother is no longer available to them: We'll take care of them till they are grown.
ADAM
Can we name them - they have short tails - they're,
(enunciates)

ELLE
Alright, we'll call them, dogkts.
Adam plays with cubs, while Elle prepares cub mash.

And brings it: helps Adam feed cubs Tells of coming baby sister [Elle pokes Adam's belly on prior surgery scar]:

Adam, I want to tell you a special secret.
ADAM
What is a secret?
ELLE
A secret is something you didn't have to pay attention-to before I tell you.
ADAM
What is the secret?
ELLE
The secret is, you are going to have a little baby-sister.
ADAM
What is a baby-sister?
ELLE
A baby is someone who is like you now; and when your sister grows-up she'll be a mommy like me - you'll be a daddy.
ADAM
Where is the baby-sister now?
ELLE
The baby is in my belly.
ADAM
What is a belly?
ELLE
(points to Adam's belly)

Below the rib-bone;
(pokes gently)

But you are never to poke your sister! You may play with her when she is grown some, but don't ever animal-play with her: not like playing with your catch and dogks: She is the same flesh as you.
ADAM
(thrusts-out his belly)

Will I have a baby, too?
ELLE
(laughs)

No, only mommies have the baby in the belly. But you will have to help me take care of your baby-sister. Do you think you are ready to help me by doing what I tell you, when I tell you?
ADAM
I think so.
ELLE
Good. Your baby-sister will come soon: I'll tell you when.
(begins away)
ADAM
Mommy:
(beat)

When will Mr. Gabriel come again?
ELLE
(holding)

Adam: Mr. Gabriel has his own work to tend - and you'll have yours: He'll visit when he has the season. But we always have what we already know of him.
ADAM
Yes.
